Geocache Description:

The cache is a regular cache, a sandwich box secured with a rubber band, and enclosed in a mini zipped bag, so it is a good size to find, placed not too far from the footpath where it crosses the A5 East of Pentre Berw. Access is disable friendly, but not wheelchair friendly.

Cache has childs helicoptor toy, key ring, fluffy owl, notebook and pen, and Cache Mover Geocoin.

This is our first Cache, and we are taking you to an area that we often come to for a gentle walk, the Malltraeth Marshes, very flat, very people friendly and which stretches from Malltraeth to Llangefni.

There is a carpark at N 53 13.684 W004 18.190. Enter access road at de-restriction sign. Walk through the gate at the end of the car park, follow the path to the river, about a third of a mile, turn right and follow the path to the A5 main road. The footpath crosses the road and continues to Llangefni. It’s a busy rural road, so take care crossing it. You are now in the search area, half a mile from the car park. Although it is a busy rural road, there is excellent visibility, so you can spot muggles half a mile away, giving you time to pose innocently! There is an entrance to a gated enclosure, not far from the footpath crossing, which local dog walkers use as a lay-by, and it safely holds a car off road. This would be better for the disabled, but the car park way-marked above is only half a mile from the cache site, so using that would be my advice, especially if you have children and dogs – give them a treat, use the paths and run their energy off.

The Malltraeth Marshes were formed when the cob was built, and the land reclaimed from the sea. The chimney stack you see near Pentre Berw is the remains of the coal mining industry which went on in the 1800s across the marsh. Some of the lakes in the marsh were caused by subsidence that the mining caused. The area encompassing the car park, and marsh west of the river and canal, is managed by the RSPB, and road improvements, making the coal mining buildings safe, re-establishing marsh water levels, has been encompassed by them, with the help of Dwr Cymru (Welsh Water) and funds from the EC. There is a picnic table at the car-park. The morning we hid the cache, we saw a female Hen Harrier, Buzzard, Peregrine Falcon, Sparrowhawk and Kestrel on the reserve. In the summer wheatear pass through, and plovers and skylarks breed.

The area is criss-crossed with paths, that give you a myriad of routes to explore, and a cycle way goes from Llangefni to Malltraeth, three quarters of it completely on the marsh, and only the final portion on roadway.

Congratulations to ECOBAKE for the FTF.
