This cache is located in the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark which covers 18,000 hectares of rugged mountainous uplands and gently rising lowlands in counties Cavan and Fermanagh.
“The Letter Box” is one of a series of caches found close to the Legnabrocky (Badger’s Hollow) Trail which leads from the Cuilcagh Mountain car park towards the impressive hulk of Cuilcagh (665m). Heading south from the car park along the stone track will take you into a fascinating landscape of limestone features such as dolines and shakeholes. Your walk runs parallel with the Aghinrawn River which sinks underground to help form the Marble Arch cave system. So, tread gently because far below cavers may be crawling their torch lit way amidst stalactites, stalagmites and subterranean passages. Just a short distance up the track under an “umbrella” of Hazel and “fairy” thorns your “treasure” (a medium sized tablock box containing a log book and swaps) is hidden – it is neatly tucked away where only a leprechaun might try to post a letter.
The car park provides handy parking with a picnic table and BBQ plate. It is certainly a beautiful spot for an outdoor treat – and, as you munch through your sandwiches listen out for birds such as Cuckoo (about May time) and Ravens (at any time). Should you require cafe or toilet facilities the Marble Arch Cave Visitor Centre (open late March – early September ..... 10.00hrs to 16.30/17.00hrs) with its educational displays and shows is only a short drive away. It is well worth a visit.
I hope you enjoy your walk into this karst wonderland – to keep it this way please honour the Country Code. Remember, that as you are sharing this area with livestock DOGS ARE NOT ALLOWED. The cache has been positioned so that it is family friendly – however, please take commonsense precautions.
I would like to thank the staff of the Marble Arch Caves Global Geopark for agreeing to, and helping with the placement of the caches. If you would like to find out more about the Geopark please check out www.marblearchcavesglobalgeopark.com.
