Geocache Description:

A replacement for Monroe's Gold - formerly a multi-cache.

This cache location overlooks the place where GOLD was discovered back in 1848. (From the Park Brochure) According to the Gooch-Monroe family’s oral history, Peter and Nancy Gooch came to Coloma as slaves in 1849. The following year California became a free state. Peter Gooch worked in construction and at odd jobs, and Nancy did domestic chores for the miners. By 1861 Nancy had saved enough money to buy the freedom of her son, Andrew Monroe – still a slave in Missouri. Andrew brought his wife, Sarah, and their three children to Coloma, where they became respected farmers. In the 1940s the State purchased some of the Monroe landholdings from Andrew Monroe’s son, Pearley, which included the original site of Sutter’s Mill and the site of Marshall’s gold discovery. The Monroe Ridge trail is a nice 3 mile loop trail that takes you up above the James Marshall Memorial. There are great views of the Coloma valley and South Fork of the American river area. There are several picnic tables along the trail. So bring a lunch or a snack. The cache is a regular sized camouflaged container. A free map of the trails in the park is available at the desk in the Park Museum. You can also visit the Parks website at: http://www.parks.ca.gov/default.asp?page_id=484 This cache is hiker friendly but bikes and dogs are not allowed. There is also a parking fee which will help support our state parks. Please log your find or no find online so I will know how the cache is doing. If you feel our coordinates are off please post your coordinates with your log so we can make adjustments if necessary. No more boring log entries. Hey folks how about leaving a log entry that tells us something about finding this geocache or about your day of geocaching? Remember the cache owners and anyone with a watch on the cache will read your log, how about making it interesting. We Thank You.
