Geocache Description:

This is part of the Weird History of Las Cruces series.

In 1943, a prisoner of war camp was erected in this area of Las Cruces. This camp was a satellite camp from the one at Fort Bliss. Prisoners serving here were from the German Afrika Corps. Typical duties included picking of cotton and other agricultural chores.

Of note in the historical record was on Werner Paul Lueck, who escaped in November 1945, and was recaptured in Mexico City in 1954, long after the war was over.
