Geocache Description:

The Cistercian monks constructed fish ponds to ensure they had a fresh supply of fish.

The Cistercian monks changed the land scape that we see today, from a boggy isolated landscape by digging a diversion channel to take the River Arrow on a straight course up to the North West end of the site before is meanders back to its original course.

The fish ponds were created to provide the Cistercian monks with a fresh supply of fish. The ponds been fed by diversion channels from the River Arrow, which can still be seen today. The monks also used the diverted water to power a watermill to the West of the site. The depression where the mill pond was remains today, but the water was diverted again when the existing mill pond and mill was constructed.
