Gouge Eye is an old nickname for Alanreed Texas. Years ago it had several saloons and one of them had grapes on the bar. The story is when someone would see a grape on the floor in the dim light and wonder what it was the locals would tell them it was an eye ball gouged out in a bar fight the night before. Take the exits east or west from I-40 and drive into town on old Route 66. This old gas station was restored by Delbert Trew, be sure to google his articles about growing up in post depression Texas at the Amarillo Globe news web site. Also check out the two huge rest stops west of Alanreed, both should still have active geocaches.
