Geocache Description:

In the Port near Moni Gonia Monastery, Monastery of Our Lady of Gonia or Monastery of Panaghia Odigitria and the Village of Kolymvari on the coast of the south-east Rodopos peninsula in Crete, Greece, overlooking the Bay of Chania.

On the way from Chania just past the Village of Kolymvari you will come across a small Port just before the Monastary.

Moni Gonia Monastery.

Today dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin (feast day: August 15), the monastery was originally founded in the 9th century and was originally dedicated to Aghios Georghios (St. George). It was originally situated at Menies on the ruins of the ancient temple of Artemis Britomartis (Diktynna). The monastery was built in the 13th century adjacent to a cemetery, but it was rebuilt between 1618 and 1634 in its present location, with Venetian influences in its architectural design and adornment. The distinctive fountain in front of the monastery's entrance was built in 1708 and the belfry in 1849.

According to monks the present location at Kolymvari was considered a safer from attack. Despite this, the monastery was heavily damaged by Ottoman bombardment on many occasions throughout its history including in 1645, 1652, 1822, 1841, and finally during the Cretan Revolt (1866–1869) against the Ottoman Empire in 1867, evidence of which can be seen today by the remaining cannon ball lodged in the monastery wall. During World War II the monastery was partly destroyed by German bombing and it became one of the most important areas of Cretan resistance to Nazi Germany.

Today the Orthodox Academy of Crete, an important religious and spiritual academy in Crete was established by the archdiocese of the island.

Kolymvari, also known as Kolymbari, is a town and municipality in the west of the island of Crete, Greece. It is part of the Kissamos province which covers the northwest of Chania Prefecture. Kolymvari is a working coastal town at the southern end of the Rodopou peninsula and is a local centre for commerce and fishing. It does not have a sandy beach and is thus not as popular with tourists as the nearby resorts of Maleme and Platanias.

Near the town is the historic Moni Gonia Monastery. The Spiliakos river enters the sea at Kolymvari. The municipality of Kolymvari covers the Rodopou peninsula at the end of the Gulf of Chania and some villages to the south. Most of the peninsula is uninhabited and rather barren, with most villages close to Kolymvari at the southern end.

Area of the Cache is situated somewhere in the Port. Off in the distance you will see Chania across the Bay, to your left you will see the Monastary and to your right you have the Village of Kolymvari. Hope this helps.

The Cache is....Well its a..ya its not going to be easy and I cant tell you.. but what I can tell you is I have been cacheing on Crete for a while now and enjoy much of what Crete has to offer. My advise to you is while caching on Crete its always good to have a few essentials: Good shoes, mabe a pack with water and snacks, gloves, geocaching tools, sun glasses and some extra logs to help out your fellow cachers. Hope this helps as well. Enjoy and have fun cacheing, you can also visit the Cache "Afrata Hangout"!!
