Geocache Description:

This is one of six caches designed to satisfy some of the more difficult letters for "The Animal Alphabet" (GC2199J). Even if you have no interest in the challenge, the 5 traditionals- and the bonus that follow- make for a nice outing if you just want to take the dogs for a walk and get some smileys. You're looking for tupperware containers in rocks.

To answer the title of the cache, it's both. Each name is equally acceptable to refer to Cathartes aura, a scavenging bird found throughout the Americas.

Did you know....

  • though their wingspan can reach an impressive six feet, they only weigh up to 5 pounds
  • though both are similar in appearance and have similar ecological roles, the Old World and New World Vultures- including Turkey vultures- evolved from different ancestors in different parts of the world
  • because it lacks a syrinx (the bird version of a larynx), its vocalizations are limited to grunts and hisses
  • unlike most birds, it searches for food largely by smell
