Geocache Description:

Geodes' 26th cache is a bit out of the way, but in a great area to spend a bit of time exploring.

On top of Mt Monda

This is a favourite area of mine - very pleasant to drive through with lots of tall mountains, tall timber and clear, fast-flowing streams - and within easy reach of a half-day trip from where I live in Melbourne. I've a number of caches nearby and, as I needed to head up here to do a bit of cache maintenance and to find a couple of new caches on Mt St.Leonard, I figured I might as well continue on and explore the area a bit more - so why not increase the local cache population a bit while I'm at it?

I checked out some maps and this location looked like it might be a good spot for a cache. It's the top of Mt Monda - although it's really just a high point on the ridge line and no-one need be concerned about packing ropes and pitons. In fact, you can make it into a drive-by, even in 2wd vehicles, unless there's been a lot of rain - in which case walk the last 150m or use a 4wd. The eastern slopes of this ridge form part of the Maroondah catchment and it's a shame that the tree cover doesn't permit any views from here, as I think they'd be quite spectacular.

The major roads in the area, while unsealed, are usually pretty good - wide and well surfaced and quite suitable for 2wd - although it is a logging area and log trucks do use them. Sundays are pretty safe in this regard but it can be useful to have a UHF handset and pay attention to any signs detailing logging activity, UHF channels, road closures, etc. For those into more adventurous driving, there are many minor tracks throughout the Black Range between here and Murrindindi.

Nearby Caches

There are a number of nearby caches, most of them quite new, which should make this area especially attractive to those jaded suburban cachers looking for a bit of fresh air and some wonderful mountain scenery

Thats a big one
Monda and Dug's
Tanglefoot
Wirrawilla Rainforest Walk

and you can even log a GCA Trig if you're into them

Mount St Leonard

There was an old Biggles Bear cache ("Where Ya Goin' Mate?") a little further up the track from here, but it went with the Black Saturday bushfires.

The Cache

Getting a dnf on a cache in these less travelled regions can be particularly galling, so I don't try to make them at all tricky to find - but, as they are in a rather harsher environment than a suburban park and don't get nearly as many visitors, they do need to be anchored down pretty well. This one will probably be pretty hard to spot after a short time with rain, bark, leaves and dirt washing down on it, so use the hint - I've tried to make it very specific.
