Geocache Description:

When I hike the Pacific Crest Trail here next time, I will change my gear a bit:
  1. Marmot 30 degree Down sleeping bag (compresses better and lighter at 2 pounds)
  2. 50 feet of orange parachute cord (my 8 foot lengths of rope attached to each ground cover stake out loop did not suffice when trying to anchor tarp in the snow)
  3. REI Flash 50 pack modified by removing heavy plastic frame. (Under 3 pounds)
  4. 3/4 length ZLite foam sleeping pad placed inside pack to act as frame of pack.
  5. Cabela's Solo Bivy Tent. 3 pounds. (After trying this, I imagine I will want lighter www.gossamergear.com SpinnTwinn Tarp). The weight is a concern, and packability. Space is a virtue in your pack. Food fills it up quick!
  6. 2 Bandanas (Covers the neck from sun. Use as a wash cloth. Sunglasses case. Pot holder. Runny nose remedy as balacava. Can cover ears for minor protection.)
  7. Camo taped trail mix container with hook for pack waist belt (Use for lunch and when finished it becomes a GeoCache)
  8. 3 - 1Liter soda bottles filled with water. The water bladders take up too much space in my pack. I cannot see how much water I have left. Remember, every two liters of water weighs nearly five pounds! I carried too much water on my journey. Rely on the water caches to treat water and lighten your load. If you use purification tablets, they take time. Four hours! :( The three bottles allow you to see your water consumption and allow for water to be treated while you are hiking.
  9. No gloves. Too much bulk. Use your extra socks as gloves.
  10. Paper towels rather than toilet paper. Puts a new spin on the slang, roughing it in the woods. Paper towels can be reused in some cases saving trash space on the trail.
  11. No ground cover. Use emergency sleeping bag as ground cover. Lighter and packs nicer in ziploc bag.
  12. Rain poncho from Target. Coleman brand. Under $10. Adds protection to rain gear and more importantly, large enough to go over your pack.
  13. Frogg Toggs DriDucks rain jacket and pants. Only $18 from Sports Authority! Lighter and more compressible than nylon rain gear. (Buy a size or two larger than you wear. In case of cold weather you can stuff your sleeping bag around you inside to act as insulation.)
  14. Clean shoes and socks in the car. Your feet will get wet. Carry extra socks in your pack as well. Do NOT use your sleeping socks ever for hiking.
  15. No underwear. Limits chafing.
Try to get the big three (pack, shelter, and sleeping system) to under 10 pounds. Weigh everything. What could you live without? The lighter the load, the further you go! :)
What would you change about your gear next time?
Please report on the condition of the GeoCache. Thank you.
