The cache is a green plastic ‘Timmy Horton’s Mug’ that I purchased last year from Alberta, Canada. The cache is marked with its co-ordinates and is disguised in a white/sand coloured sock at:-
N 23° 22.177 E 057° 49.795
The area & fish!:
This is the first of my series (Squipper in Oman 1 to 7) placed in my favourite locations of natural Oman. This cache is close to the natural Hot Springs at the village of Al Thorawah. It’s a cracking village, built on an Oasis. After finding the cache, relax in the natural geothermic 40° springs! Don’t forget your swim shorts/bathing suits & a towel or you’ll miss out big time! Furthermore, why not have your feet exfoliated/cleaned by the special Garra Rufa Fish. Note: The removal of dead skin cells is not painful, because Garra Rufa fish have no teeth! It is however a weird experience & I was unable to leave my feet in the water for any prolonged period without making unnatural facial expressions!!!!
1. Bottom of the steps for your feet done.
2. Stone Bath Tub to relax.
Directions & parking:
Travelling from Muscat, head West towards Sohar on the Qaboos/As Seeb St (01). At N 23° 40.019 E 057° 53.034 turn left & head South down the 13. (Note these Co-ords are approximate (taken from Google!). As you approach it, you’ll see Lulu’s Hypermarket to your right).
After approx 15-20 mins, you’ll pass a Shell garage on your left (which was my regular stop off point for a coffee). A further 5-10 mins past the garage turn left at a roundabout towards the village of Nakhal. Drive through the village until you come to a fork in the road and bear right. Then follow a signpost for A’ Thorawah; Continue along the narrow winding road until you reach a car park area next to the Hot Springs and picnic area. A round trip from Muscat will take approx 4 hrs allowing half hour to search.
To The Cache:
Leave the car and walk along the Wadi bed. Stay in the centre of the Wadi to minimise GPS bounce. The Wadi contains natural water and small pools all the time but can be negotiated easily without getting your feet too wet. Avoid the Wadi after heavy rainfall. The trek to the cache will take approx 20 mins from the car park. From GZ, you have an approximate 20 metre scramble to the right!
Safety:
1. Flip flops not recommended, sandals with back strap minimum.
2. Ankle support recommended as many small/large boulders.
3. Inadvisible following rain, Wadi can flood.
4. Watch out for beasties! Snakes in particular, so don't overturn rocks unnecessarily.
5. Stay away at night - too many beasties & unsafe night trekking.
