VIEW ON OLD CHURCHES

BY MOBELLINO TEAM

[EN] The Orthodox Church on the Hill, dedicated to Holy Trinity is the first orthodox church of Cluj, built between 1795-1796 in baroque style. The church is situated at nr. 12, in a picturesque garden, between the graves of an old Orthodox cemetery. Following Josephine edicts of religious tolerance, in the last decades of the eighteenth century, in Cluj were located many Romanian, Macedo-Romanian and Greek merchants coming from Brasov, which led to the strengthening of the Orthodox community. In 1788 merchants Ioan Constantin and Ienache Mavrodin sent a request to the mayor to approve the construction of a church.

[EN] On 6 April 1789 the city council rejected the request, arguing that the Edicts provide approval of building a church only for communities that are at least 100 families of believers. Through a new request to the Chancellery in Vienna, they requested approval for the Orthodox community to build a church outside the city walls. On 14 February 1780 Vienna Office approved the request and issued the building permit. Construction began in 1795 and lasted until 1796. Mural painting of the interior is of recent date.
