Geocache Description:

Grants March into Jackson.

On May 14, 1863 Union Generals Sherman and McPherson attacked the capitol of
Jackson. Confederate forces had established earthworks near what is now known as
Battlefield Park sufficient to halt the Union approach. Union commander Tuttle
while making a reconnaissance toward the Pearl River discovered a weak spot in
the Confederate line and immediately attacked, broke the line and outflanked the
Confederates resulting in the surrender of the Capitol. General Grant later
remarked that he entered a manufactory that had not ceased work during the
battle or occupation of Union forces. He and General Sherman watched as the
looms continued to make tent cloth until CSA was applied to one, at which time
he ordered everyone from the building and had it burned to the ground. Grant
placed Sherman in charge of making sure all Confederate stores in the town where
destroyed. He so ably completed this task that only three government buildings
survived the fires, two of which were the capitol building and city hall. City
Hall is rumored to have survived because the Masonic Lodge was and is located on
the third floor. Unknown to the Union soldiers was that a lot of historical
records from the Mississippi archives were protected in hollow columns in the
Masonic Lodge room.
