Kannst du micka funga?
Ja, wenn de hocka bleiben.
(Can you catch flies?
Yes, when they sit still.)
A silly PA Dutch saying you might have heard before. Here are some other PA Dutch words you may have heard if you live in this area: STROUBLY (messy), GRETZY (cranky), DOPPICH (clumsy), FRESS (eat), ROOTSH (crawl or squirm), WUTZ (pig)
I have heard many of these mixed with english over the years from my grandfather. My fathers side was PA Dutch and has deep roots in Berks Co. After my fathers parents passed away I continued the research in the family genealogy my "Nana" began. I found many family lines hundreds of years old and found my family name roots. The KilllerBee's first relative, Peter, came from Germany and settled in the Hill Church area of District twp. in the 1750's. His son (my 5th great-grandfather), Phillip, served in the Revolutionary War. This cache is a nod to my PA Dutch roots.
So tell me dear cacher...
Kannst du micka funga?
Note: The Thun Trail (pronounced tune) is part of the Schuylkill River Trail System. This cache was placed as part of a series that KilllerBee and Trekker67 (aka KBT67) are hiding along the trail to hopefully encourage geocachers to travel this route (see bookmark list). Happy Trails!
Congrats to Rentell for FTF!
