Geocache Description:

The 2nd Annual Billy the Kid Geofest will convene at Fort Stanton State Monument in the picnic area (N 33° 29.660 W 105° 31.523') - northeast corner as you drive in on the Fort access road, or in one of the Fort buildings if weather is inclement. The picnic area is right next to the Museum/Visitor Center and a couple hundred feet or so west of GC1T047 Great Generations. There is plenty of parking. Participants are asked to arrive between 9-10 AM. Event start will be 10:00 AM.

There has been concern by cachers on whether the closure of the Lincoln National Forest due to fire danger will affect our event. It will not. The Fort Stanton State Monument remains open as does the 25,000 acres of BLM-managed public land surrounding it. The event will be along the Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway which is mostly paved roads and nothing closed. We did put three caches on the forest but for the event, we'll physically relocate those. At the event start, we'll do a safety briefing and give any specific instructions on caches or other aspects. Thanks to cacher sexyboo for reminding me, here's a link to BLM Fire Restrictions currently in effect, which everyone should review (visit link) If you have specific questions, just contact me either at Mike_Bilbo@blm.gov or cell 575-420-7121.

For the New Mexico Statehood Centennial, the New Mexico Dept of Transportation asked each scenic and backcountry byway in New Mexico to provide a geocache. Well, it just so happens that the Billy the Kid (BtK) Geofest perfectly fits or dovetails into such a request. So, instead of just one cache, we'll have a few... hint, hint, wink, wink. And now the 2nd Annual BtK Geofest is an official statehood event, sponsored by the Billy the Kid National Scenic Byway. Thus, this will remain a unique and special event. Event focus will be the BtK National Scenic Byway (visit link) So be sure to put this on your watchlist. At rendezvous time at 7:00 PM we'll do a cookout or BBQ back at start location. Camping can be on the 24,000 (+) acres of BLM-managed public land of the surrounding the Fort (Fort Stanton-Snowy River Cave National Conservation Area (visit link) at Cave Campground (primitive) or Horse Trails Campground, which has RV electricity and potable water. The BLM Campground is on State Road 220, about 1.5 mile north of the Fort and it's $8 per night. The Campground Host is Jerry Bathurst and his cell number is 575-322-0030.

Closest motel is the Smokey Bear Motel in Capitan, 7 miles west by road (nearest cache is GC1TMP9). 7 miles east in Lincoln are three bed & breakfast establishments (nearest cache is GC29WTA). Please log your plan to attend - even if a maybe - so we can get a ballpark headcount for the food and other goodies.
