Serene and Peaceful says it all. Dungeness lighthouse can be seen on the spit across four miles of calm water. This high-quality cache is located on the beach 1/4 mile south and east of the small parking area at Wilcox Lane and Jamestown Road. Allow yourself plenty of time, and bring your binoculars. There is lots to see, scenery and wildlife, and plenty of dry logs to sit on.
This beautiful beach is a Sequim area secret. The hiker entrance is through Graysmarsh Public Access at the end of Wilcox Lane, where it joins with Jamestown Road, in Sequim. There is a large sign there identifying the public area. The parking area is small. Do not park on the pavement. This section of Graysmarsh Farm is the Gierin Creek watershed. A prohibited entry area some ways back from the beach is marked by a wire fence and signs. The Farm owners consider the actual marsh and the watershed as a precious part of the wildlife habitat and provide for its continued protection. It thus remains strictly off limits to all human visitors in the effort to maintain the natural ecosystem. You are asked to respect and to continue to honor that effort by staying in the public area. Besides the Roosevelt elk which hide out and seasonally calve in the valley, and salmon which use the creek bed to spawn, migrating birds such as geese use the marsh and neighboring grain fields. Full-time residents include Bald Eagle pairs and deer. Of course these creatures are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the ecosystem visible here. Wildlife, birds, and native plants abound in quantities too numerous to describe here. Bring your bird book if you have one. This is a premium birding site.
