This cache will bring you to the small country town of Archies Creek. The town has a population of about 70 people. It is said the town got its name from a swag who camped on the banks of the creek, his name was Alex Archies. He had come to survey the area and investigate its suitability for a butter factory.
This town use to be Home to Archies Creek Produce Company (It was also know by some other names as well). It opened in 1896-97. It was one of the first privately owned Butter Factories and in 1903 it became a co-operative Butter Factory. It had been the life line of the town for some 97 years till its closure in 1983. Like the other smaller milk factories in the area that closed due to rising costs and the consolidation of the Milk/Butter Factories. Now the major milk factory is Murray Goulbourn in Leongatha.
The Archies Creek butter factory use to employ some 200 people in its peak. All the old buildings are still in use today to a variety of different businesses.
