In recognition of World Kidney Day
March 10, 2011
Kidneys are important. Without them, we can't pee, and then what would we do during TV commercial breaks? What excuse would girls have to escape to the bathroom to text friends to rescue them from awkward blind dates?
This cache is located next to a center where people who suffer from kidney failure come a few times a week for life-saving treatments. More and more of these centers are popping up as kidney disease becomes more prevalent, a result of the growing nationwide epidemic of diabetes and high blood pressure.
The main job of our kidneys is to remove toxins and excess water from our blood. Kidneys also help to control our blood pressure, to produce red blood cells and to keep our bones healthy.
What can you do for your kidneys?
1. Stay fit and active.
2. If you're diabetic, keep your sugar levels well controlled.
3. Monitor your blood pressure. If it's > 130/90, see your doctor to discuss treatment.
4. Eat healthy, minimize salt, and keep your weight in check.
5. Use over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications (such as ibuprofen and naproxen) only when needed. Be careful about taking them on a daily basis.
6. Quit smoking. And if you don't smoke, don't start.
With thanks to KidneyBoy, NanaRed, and the Kt/V crew for everything they do...

Happy caching!
