
The Oak Hammock Marsh is hosting its fifth Cache the
Marsh event on Sunday May 29,
2011
The event will begin with an introduction to GPS, GIS and
geocaching.
GPS units will be available for those who don't have one and would
like to find out more about this fun and addictive family friendly
activity.
Several new caches will be unveiled and made available for
finding throughout the Oak Hammock Marsh Wildlife Managed area for
this event.
- Introduction to GPS and GIS: 10:30 a.m.
- Introduction to Geocaching: 11:30 a.m.
- Lunch: 12:00 - 1:00 p.m.
- Geocache Challenge: 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
- BBQ supper and prizes: 5:00 p.m.
Soups, salads and sandwiches will be offered in our café
overlooking the marsh at lunch time and picnic tables will be
available for those who prefer to bring their own lunch.
Burgers and hot dogs will be available for purchase during the BBQ
supper ($1 hot dogs / $2 burgers). Feel free to bring your
favourite side dish to share (salads, desserts, munchies).
Some caches may require the use of hipwaders or canoes.
Knowledge of a wetland ecosystem and its inhabitants will be very
valuable!
Admission to the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre is not
required to participate in the Cache Challenge but is strongly
recommended as some valuable resources can be found within its
educational exhibits and library.
Feel free to bring any resource material pertaining to birds,
wildlife, insects, micro and macro invertebrates, plants,
wildflowers, algea, trees, wetlands, astronomy, soil types, rocks
and minerals, and the environment in general. Hipwaders, D-nets,
Ekman dredge, plankton nets, radio-telemetry equipment and canoes
will be available.
Admission fee will be needed to participate in the Introduction
to GPS and GIS workshop and Geocaching workshop. The use of a GPS
is included.
Admission to the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Centre:
- Adults $6
- Youth $4 (3 to 17 years old)
- Seniors $5 (55+)
- Family $20 (2 adults and their children)
- Toddlers Free (2 years old and under)
The Oak Hammock Marsh Wildlife Managed Area is over 36 km2 with
more than 30 kilometers of hiking trails. Bring some water and
snacks as some caches will be located a fair distance from the
nearest parking lot and motorized vehicles are not allowed on the
trails.
The marsh offers great wildlife viewing opportunities,
especially during this time of the year. Bring your binoculars and
bird guide.

Participate in the Great MBGA Stampede -
The Second Edition
Back by popular demand, the Great MBGA Stampede will take place
again this year.
Buy one of the beautiful MBGA 5 Year Anniversary Geocoin for
$15 ($10 for the coin and $5 for the prizes) and enter your coin in
a race starting the day of the Cache the Marsh Event and ending at
the MBGA AGM next year.
Every coin will be dropped in the event on the day of the event and
will stampede across the world in the hope of raking up the most
mileage until closing day next year.
Rules are:
- A cacher must not move his own coin
- The same cacher must not "dip" the coin in many caches.
Only one cache per cacher and a different cacher must pick up the
coin every time.
- Mileage will be calculated based on the information on
TB map and only until midnight the day before the AGM. Coin mileage
will be verified at the AGM and winner(s) will be awarded their
prize(s) during the AGM
- Coins will be available for purchase at the Cache the
Marsh event or on-line at www.mbga.ca laptops will be made
available on site to register the coins prior to the
Stampede
- Coins can be purchased and activated ahead of time as
long as their mileage reads "0" when they are dropped in the
event
- Cachers can enter as many coins as they wish. Coins can
be customize (i.e: drill a hole and attach stuff to
them)
