Um agricultor que lavra a sua horta sentado. Isto levanta questões a alguns transeuntes curiosos. Ao perguntar-lhe porque lavrava sentado, o agricultor respondeu que já o tentou deitado e que isso sim era impossível-
Humor no Alentejo, a região mais pobre de Portugal. Os seus habitantes são frequentemente o alvo de anedotas e piadas pelo resto do país. Quando confrontados com isto encolhem os ombros, despreocupado: a vida como um pequeno agricultor numa provincia de latifundiários nunca foi fácil nessa ‘terra do pão’ .
Mas os tempos mudaram. O turismo é uma nova fonte de receitas, de uma maneira que amenta bem no tranquilo estilo de vida alentejana. Embora no verão algumas povoações costeiras se encham de turistas, de resto o Alentejo permanece intacto : campos de cereais, olivais e sobreiros compõem a interminável paisagem.
Fascinantes são os misteriosamente contorcidos sobreiros que dão à paisagem algo de mágico. Mais de metade da cortiça mundial vem aqui.
Nuno é o português mais apaixonado que eu conheço, boémio e cheia de vida. Com ele, passeio através desta magnífica paisagem. Rebanhos de ovelhas, vacas e porcos pretos, que se alimentam com as bolotas.
Infindáveis são os caminhos de terra batida, não encontramos nada nem ninguém,exepto o aroma de pomares de laranjas e campos de flores .............diverte-se connosco neste caça de tesouro.

- A farmer, sitting on a stool ploughing his land. This raises questions from passing travellers. If they ask why he is sitting there, the farmer replies that he first tried lying and that he did not succeed-
Humor in the Alentejo, the poorest region of Portugal. The residents elsewhere are the target of friendly ridicule. They don't bother: life as a small farmer in a county of large landowners was always needy in this' terra do pão' - country of the bread.
But times have changed. Tourism is a new source of income, but fits in perfectly with the peaceful Alentejo life style. In summer season the number of tourists in some coastal towns might be high, the countryside remains its unspoilt calm, relaxed caracter. Grain fields, olive trees and cork oaks as far as the eye can see, wooded hills, long stretched houses.
Fascinating are the mysterious curly cork oaks that give the landscape a magical appearance.´' More than half of the cork comes from here. On all trees a different number. Once every 10 years the trees are stripped of their bark, "says Nuno. "Do you see the 3? This means that the tree in 2013 has to be stripped. "
Nuno is the most colorful Portuguese I know, exuberant and full of life. With him I walk through this beautiful countryside. Herds of sheep, cows, black pigs , which eat the acorns from under the cork.
Endless dirt roads, we come across nobody but the smell of orange groves and lupine fields ............... enjoy the cache !

- Een boer , die zittend op een kruk zijn land aan het spitten is. Dat roept vragen op bij nieuwsgierige voorbijgangers. Maar als je informeert waarom hij erbij is gaan zitten, antwoordt de boer dat hij het eerst liggend heeft geprobeerd en dat dat helemaal niet lukt-
Humor in de Alentejo, de armste streek van Portugal. De bewoners zijn elders het mikpunt van gemoedelijke spot. Maar gelaten halen ze hun schouders op: het leven als kleine boer in een provincie van grootgrondbezitters was altijd karig in dit 'terra do pão'- land van het brood.
Maar, de tijden zijn veranderd. Het toerisme vormt een nieuwe bron van inkomsten, in een mate die op het rustige Alentejaanse lijf gesneden is. s´Zomers mag het in enkele kustplaatsen druk worden, voor de rest blijft de Alntejo onbedorven, Graanvelden, olijfbomen en kurkeiken zover als het oog reikt, beboste heuvels, hier en daar langgerekte huizen.
Fascinerend zijn de geheimzinnige kronkelarmige kurkeiken die het landschap iets toverachtigs geven . Meer dan de helft van de kurk komt hier vandaan. Op alle bomen staat een ander getal. 'Eens in de 10 jaar worden de bomen van hun bast ontdaan' vertelt Nuno. ' Zie je die 3? Dat betekent dat die boom in 2013 opnieuw aan de beurt is.'
Nuno is de meest kleurrijke portugees die ik ken, bourgondisch en vol levenslust. Met hem wandel ik door dit prachtige landschap. Schaapskuddes, koeien, en zwarte varkens die de eikels eten vanonder de kurkeik, Eindeloos zijn de zandwegen, we komen niemand tegen behalve de geur van sinaasappel boomgaarden en lupine velden .....................geniet mee in het vinden van de schat!
