Camo-painted round container; swag/log/stash note; BYOP/P
To reach the GZ take Mellis Road south from the Yakima Valley Highway. Access to parking area is via a gravel frontage road.
Cache is located in a Fish and Wildlife area and you will need the new Discovery Pass (or your existing WDFW permit for these areas ONLY) for this one if you're planning on using the parking lot. Parking without a permit is located very close by on West Mellis Frontage Road. This is a terrific area to hike, get some exercise and take geo-dogs for a run.
As always, use caution whenever reaching into hiding holes and it's best to carry a walking stick for such purposes. I've never seen rattlesnakes in this area but have seen gopher and ribbon snakes during the warmer months. Also either use insect repellent or check for ticks on clothing during the warmer months. There is abundant wildlife in the area so keep your eyes open and camera handy.
Please do not attempt this cache from the frontage road and going through the orchards. Those areas are private property. Start your trek from the parking lot area and then use the trails along the dike to gain access to the GZ. Cache name is based on the ice flows washing down the Yakima River on the day I set this cache out. That was a couple of weeks ago when it was colder though.
This is a new type of container for me with a different type of lid. Please make sure that the lid is replaced well. I'm curious to see if this container will make it sufficiently through rain and snow so any problematic remarks on logs would be greatly appreciated so I can change the container quickly if problems occur. Fear not... for if you encounter moisture in the container and are unable to actually sign the paper log then record your journey as a "find" anyway (noting the problem) on this page and I'll remedy the problem ASAP.
