Fermoy - Background
Fermoy or Mainistir Fhear Maíghe, meaning "Monastery of
the Men of the Plain" is a small town in the centre of the
Blackwater Valley Region and is strategically located where the
Dublin-Cork and Rosslare-Killarney routes intersect.
The name for this cache follows a discussion with a local who
maintained that the Irish translation of Fermoy should in fact be
"Mainstir Fhear Maithe" actually meaning "the monastery of the good
(natured) men hence goodfellas...There isn't in fact a member of
the Mafia lurking nearby so dont worry
The town is a bridging point on the river Blackwater and is well
renowned for its fishing and is internationally recognized as "an
angling centre of repute".
The town's origins lie in the establishment of a Cistercian
Abbey nearby in the year 1170. At the dissolution of the
monasteries during the Tudor period, the abbey and its lands passed
through the following dynasties: 'Sir Richard Grenville, and
William Forward and that of famous Irish Physicist Robert Boyle.
However, the site could hardly have been regarded as a town and, by
the late 18th century, was little more than a few cabins and an
inn.
