Geocache Description:

A fun little park to explore.

Mair Park was part of the estate of Robert Mair, which he gave to the city in 1914. It contains his coach road through mature lowland forest to the Hatea River. He gifted the park in the hope that others might learn to understand and appreciate nature as he did.

The park also contains a children's playground, toilets, and a BBQ. The access from the car park in Rurumoki Street is over the former coach road - a wide, sloping metal path, leading down to the river flats. A bridge leads across the Hatea River to the Parihaka reserves and walkways. The river at this point is just above the reach of the high tide and contains riffles and still ponds, which are a favourite habitat for ducks.
