How to get there:
There are numerous points of access to tracks leading to the
Eastern Hutt Hills ridge-line. If walking, the best point to start
is to park at the top of Summit Road in Fairfield and walk up the
firebreak. This route takes you up the spur in the middle
foreground of the photo above. It is steep and rutted in places,
and after a period of rain it can get quite slippery on the steeper
parts. Once at the top the track joins a four wheel drive road
along the ridgeline and this takes you the rest of the way to the
cache site with quite gentle gradients for most of the way.
Total walking distance from the gate at the top of Summit Rd should
be about 3.7km each way. If you're fast you can get there in 40
minutes, for most people allow an hour each way.
If accessing the cache by mountain bike, the best way is probably
from the top of the Wainuiomata Hill Road. This takes you along the
ridge-line for almost the entire way.
The ridge-line road goes on as far as Whiteman's Valley. Just north
of the summit where the cache is, a side road leads to a cellular
and microwave radio repeater station, and the cache is adjacent to
this. Once you reach the gate to the fence around the transmitting
site, go to the left and at the south-west corner of the fence
there is a small track that leads to a viewpoint with a magnificent
outlook over the valley. Once you're here, you're within metres of
the cache.
About the cache:
The cache is a camouflage-painted 400ml snap-lock plastic container
with logbook, writing implement, etc. There is room for geocoins
and other small swappable items.
