At Jasper Lake you will find the only sand-dune ecosystem located
in the Canadian Rockies. Here the sand-dunes have been formed and
reformed by the winds since the end of the last ice age. Jasper
Lake is a wide shallow section of the Athabasca River. The Lake
removes silt and sand from the river which forms the lake bed. In
the summer when the water level is high, the lake fills the valley.
During the fall and winter the water level recedes and this leaves
the sand exposed to the elements. The strong westerly winds blow
the sand and silt down the valley, forming two large dune islands
near the northwest shore of the lake. Many times vehicles driving
by on the highway are battered by the sand storms. Please be
careful and protect this fragile eco-system. Please bring your own
pen. In accordance with Jasper National Park guidelines no trading
items or things that might attract wildlife are to be left in this
cache.
