The geological formation which you can see across the highway from the cache site was named The Palisade because of it's sheer cliff face and vertical markings. These attributes are reminiscent of palisade walls that were used as a protective enclosure around forts. A palisade is a strong, long, stake. One end of the stake is firmly driven into the ground and the other end is sharpened. The Palisade cliff lies within the Front Ranges and is composed of Palliser Formation limestone. At one time The Palisade was home to a forest fire lookout station. It was a good area to get a clear view of the Athabasca Valley. Please bring your own pen. In accordance with Jasper National Park guidelines no trading items or things that might attract wildlife are to be left in this cache. The Palisades Picnic area has a lot of history. It was once a part of Lewis Swift's old homestead. It was the only freehold land within the National Park. Gordon Bride the owner until the early sixties sold it back to the Park. In the mid to late 50's Gordon ran a dude ranch out of the area. He decided to open a bungalow camp along the highway. He built a small cluster of cabins and called it the Palisades Motel. The area in which you will find the cache used to be a flowerbed. The lilacs in the area, which are a non- native species to Jasper were probably introduce at this time. Check out the picture of the Palisades Motel to see what it looked like back then.
