A few kilometres from Rouillac, on the commune of
Saint-Cybardeaux the vestiges of the sanctuary and the Gallo-Roman
theatre of Bouchauds are, the first centuries of our era. The
theatre was dug and built with the hillside while the sanctuary is
at its top.
1---The site of the Gallo-Roman theatre is
discovered in 1865 per Jean Gontier, who undertakes excavations
there on his own sums of money, it obtains the classification under
the Historic buildings by decree of December 23, 1881. At the
beginning which part of the Gallo-Roman theatre is released, it is
named by the inhabitants of the surroundings the castle of Insipid
(castle of the fairies).
The Gallo-Roman theatre of Bouchauds to the diameter of 105,60
meters, is largest of Aquitaine, larger in particular than Orange
the ancient Theatre of a diameter of 104 meters. It could
accomodate more than 5000 people.
Whereas it was built at the beginning of Ier century of
installations in the form of lines of steps in orchestrated and of
passages between orchestrated and the cavea date from IIIe
century.
2---The Sanctuary which is located at the top of
the hill, is composed of two monumental sets which are juxtaposed,
limited by enclosing walls two time old: one at the end of the
first the other of the end of Ier century the other at the end of
the second beginning of the third centuries. These elements show a
perenniality of occupation of the places throughout the Early
empire.
For the time being, no inscription, no sculpture of scale could
facilitate the identification of the divinities who were venerated
in the temples. Only a noble metal Mercury statuette (money gilded
with the gold sheet) discovered at the time of the excavations of
1995, gives a possible track when to these mysterious gods called
upon in the sanctuary of Bouchauds.
