Travertine cone / Forrásmészkõ-kúp
One of the youngest geological formations in
Hungary is the travertine cone at Egerszalók, which can be found in
the Bükkalja area. In 1961, when drillers instead of discovering
crude oil, stumbled upon thermal water. The borehole was
transformed into a well, but due to a technological mistake it
could not be closed properly, and therefore the 68 ? thermal
water, which is rich in minerals, has been flowing down the
hillside forming a special strip limestone formation. The 5 m high
and about 120 m2 large travertine 'mound' was formed
over a 50 year period and it is still changing. The local
inhabitants call it the "salt mound". The freshwater limestone can
be seen at this site - similar to those which are derived from cold
karst waters - are formed by the precipitation of dissolved calcium
carbonate from the water coming up to the surface from more than
400 m depth. According to the radiocarbon dating, this thermal
water is about 18.000-20.000 years old.
Over the years, the salt hill has become a symbol for the area,
unique in its features. This natural wonder can not be found
anywhere else in Europe, and only in two other locations in the
world (Pamukkale, Turkey-Asian part and Yellowstone Park U.S.) The
travertine cone has been declared a protected object. You are not
allowed to enter its area; however, it can be observed from the
visitors' path which crosses above the cone or from the area of the
close thermal bath.
The thermal water contains 18 trace elements (minerals that are
needed for the normal function of metabolic, reproductive, and
immune systems) essential for the human body. The tests positively
qualified the thermal water as medicinal water, beneficial both as
bathing and drinking water, and effective in the treatment of the
following ailments:
- Chronic joint inflammation
- Different acute inflammatory degenerative problems of the spine
(spondylosis, discopathia)
- Treatment for paralyses, acute muscle pains and sports
injuries
- Arthritis
- Inflammation of the nervous system (Neuritis, neuralgia)
- Bile and gastric disorders

Hazánk egyik legfiatalabb földtani képzõdménye
az egerszalóki forrásmészkõ, amely a Bükkalján található. 1961-ben
kõolaj és földgáz után kutatva végeztek itt próbafúrásokat, azonban
a keresett ásványok helyett termálvizet találtak. A fúrást kúttá
képezték ki, de egy mûszaki hiba miatt a lezárás nem sikerült, és
az ásványi anyagokban igen gazdag, 68 ?-os termálvíz azóta
szabadon folyik szét a domboldalon. A forró vízbõl kiváló sók
folyamatosan építik a csipkézett, fehér mésztufa képzõdményeket. Az
5 m magas és 120 m2 területû mésztufakúp több, mint 50
év alatt alakult ki és még manapság is folyamatosan növekszik. A
helyiek "sódombnak" nevezik. Az itt látható édesvízi mészkõ -
hasonlóan a hideg karszt-vizeinkbõl keletkezett mészkövekhez - a
több, mint 400 m mélységbõl a felszínre emelkedõ vizekben oldott
karbonát kicsapódásával képzõdik. A radiokarbonos mérések szerint
ez a termálvíz 18.000-20.000 éves.
Az évek során a sódomb egyedülálló jellemzõi miatt a környék
szimbólumává vált, melyhez hasonló természeti képzõdmény a világon
csak két helyen található (Pamukkale-ban, Törökország ázsiai részén
és az amerikai Yellowstone Parkban), Európában pedig egyedülálló. A
forrásvízi mészkõkúp védelem alatt áll. Nem léphetsz a területére,
azonban megtekinthetõ egy rajta kialakított látogatói ösvény mentén
vagy a közeli termálfürdõ területérõl.
Az emberi szervezet számára nélkülözhetetlen nyomelemekbõl az
egerszalóki vízben 18 féle - F, Si, P, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cz, Zn, Sn, Mo,
I, Al, Sc, Ti, As, Ge, Rb, W - megtalálható. Ezeken kívül a víz
számos más - B, Ga, Br, Sr, Z, Yr, Nb, Sb, Cs, Ba, Pb - elemet is
tartalmaz. Az egerszalóki víz klinikai vizsgálata és a
tapasztalatok szerint az alábbi betegségek esetén lehet sikeres
fürdõ- és ivókúrát alkalmazni:
- ízületi betegségek (idült)
- gerinc betegségek (spondylosis, discopathia)
- csont-, izom-, ínbetegségek
- az idegrendszer betegségei közül az ideggyulladás, idegzsábák,
stb.
