After numerous unsuccessful attempts, the first steam powered dredges started work on the Clutha River in 1881. The world's first commercially successful gold dredge was the Dunedin, which continued to operate in the Clutha River until 1901 by which time it had recovered 17,000 ounces (528 kg) of gold. More than 200 gold dredges operated in Otago and Southland between the 1890s and 1915

The following was reported in the Otago Witness Newspaper on February 27th 1906:

"The New Roxburgh Jubilee dredge since commencing operations in 1902, has been a consistent gold-winner, and has paid back in dividends to shareholders £2 6s per share. The dredge had just undergone a thorough overhaul, sank at its claim on Sunday morning, February 18, at a distance of 25 or 30 yards from the riverbank"

This dredge was normally moored and tied to the riverbank overnight. One night the starboard pontoon took on water and the dredge sank onto its side. At the time of the sinking the dredge was providing very good returns so it was promptly replaced by the "Roxburgh Jubilee" dredge in 1906. Word has is that the new dredge was taking 17oz of gold per week but only worked this site for 19 weeks, at the end of 1906. "Wherigos" need devices capable of playing them. This one has been written to go only so far on emulation devices.
As with my "Beckoning" chirp I am more than happy to lend my Oregon 450 to enable you to enjoy the experience.
