Geocache Description:

This cache (approximately 35mm film container sized) is placed close to the original west wing of the old Stockton and Darlington Railway Carriage Works in Hopetown Lane in Darlington, the home of The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust and the North eastern Locomotive Preservation Group (NELPG).

The cache is located close to the road so if you have children or animals please supervised them closely. It is also wheelchair accessible but help would be needed to retrive the cache.

This can be a HIGH Muggle area at times and you can be EASILY observed please replace the cache carefully so that it cannot be seen from the footpath.

The Grade 2 listed building alongside the cache site was built to an original design by the well known railway architect, Joseph Spark with the final design being eventually completed by Ross & Richardson a firm of Darlington architects.

It was originally built for manufacture and repair of four-wheeled carriages for the Stockton & Darlington Railway. In 1886 the North Eastern Railway Co. which the old S&DR had become part of in 1863 decided to move all carriage construction to York, and the works on Hopetown Lane were subsequently closed.

This building is now home to the North Eastern Locomotive Preservation Trust and the A1 Steam Locomotive Trust the builders of the new Peppercorn Class Locomotive No. 60613 The Tornado

The original Peppercorn Class Locomotive were designed by Arthur H Peppercorn (1889-1951), the last Chief Mechanical Engineer of the LNER.

Approximately half of the Peppercorn class locomotives were built at Darlington. The original engine works (or Engine shops if you prefer) were located on the site of Morrison Supermarkets on North Road (have you spotted the original clock which still hangs outside?) and Matalan Discount on Neasham Road. The Darlington North Road and Neasham Road works were demolished in the 1970’s. The last of the original Peppercorn Class locomotive were scrapped in 1966.

In 1990 a group of people came together to share an ambition - to construct a brand new Peppercorn A1 Pacific and The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust was born. In 2008 and after nearly two decades No. 60163 Tornado was completed

The NELPG was formed in 1966 with the intention of preserving some of the steam locomotives (proper trains to those in the know!) still working in the North East of England. In less than 18 months this growing band of volunteers had raised sufficient funds to purchase two heavy freight locomotives. Both of these locomotives were subsequently overhauled and transferred to the North Yorkshire Moors Railway in the early 1970s. Other projects quickly followed and in the late 1987s the Group took charge of the famous A2 Pacific 60532 'Blue Peter' also on long-term loan.

NELPG is a charity run by volunteers

NOTE: In order to stop the cache being muggled we've changed this cache rating to a 3 difficulty because you might need some type of tool to retrieve it! Please replace it as found and don't be naughty and log it without signing the log, we will be watching out for that!! Any naughtiness and we might delete your log! Thanks The Lambs @ 9
