da_miche: Die Schichten sind immer schlechter zu erkennen, daher macht der Cache nicht mehr viel Sinn. Damit geht auch der letzte EarthCache am Kühkopf in den Ruhestand.

Ein kleiner Spaziergang am Kühkopf.
A wee promenade on the Kühkopf (English description below)

Der Kühkopf ist eine vom Oberrhein und einem seiner Altarme gebildete Insel. Er gehört zu den hessischen Gemeinden Riedstadt-Erfelden (nördlicher Teil) und Stockstadt am Rhein (südlicher Teil). Früher war der Kühkopf eine Binnenhalbinsel die vom Altrhein umflossen wurde. 1828/29 wurde der Rhein begradigt, im Zuge dessen wurde das Gebiet vollständig vom linken Rheinufer getrennt. Dadurch wurde der Kühkopf eine Flussinsel wie er heute ist. Das Gebiet ist ca. 17 Quadratkilometer groß. So viel zur jüngeren Geschichte, gehen wir ein bisschen zurück.
Nach der Auffaltung der Alpen und der Bildung des Oberrheingrabens in Laufe des Tertiärs (vor ca. 65-2,5 Millionen Jahren) begann im Quartär die Vergletscherung der Alpen und der Mittelgebirge. Beim Abschmelzen dieser Gletscher kam es zu einem Transport von Schottermassen aus den höheren Gebieten in die Niederungen. Als vor ca. 2 Millionen Jahren der Anschluss des Alpenrheins an den heutigen Verlauf des Rheins zur Nordsee erfolgte, begann die Auffüllung des Oberrheingrabens mit Sedimenten. Diese Aufschotterungsphase endete vor etwa 10000 Jahren mit dem Abschmelzen der Gletscher. Seitdem gräbt sich der Rhein in die Schotterterasse und bildet so die heutige Rheinniederung.
Nach den Kälteperioden und dem Entstehen einer reichen Vegetationsdecke vor rund 1000 Jahren, begann der Rhein wieder feineres Material wie Ton und Lehm zu transportieren. Diese Stoffe lagerten sich in der Aue ab. Die Auenlehmdecke entstand vor allem in historischer Zeit, als nach Waldrodungen verstärkt Bodenerrosion im Einzugsgebiet der Flüsse stattfand.
Die Vegetation wird hauptsächlich vom Boden und vom Klima bestimmt. In Auen und Gebieten wie dem Kühkopf jedoch, werden diese Faktoren von einem dritten Faktor überlagert: dem Hochwasser. Jedes Hochwasser lagert neue Sedimente in den Auen ab und trägt so zur immer fortwährenden Bodenbildung bei. Da die Ablagerung von Faktoren wie Fließgeschwindigkeit und der Größe der Sedimente abhängt, ändern sich die Bodenverhältnisse oft schon nach wenigen Metern.

An den gegebenen Koordinaten findet ihr ein paar Informationen zum Boden am Kühkopf. Um den Cache zu loggen, beantwortet bitte die folgenden Fragen:
a) Wie dick (oder Mächtig) ist die Sedimentschicht mit der der Oberrheingraben gefüllt wurde?
b) Wie tief hat sich der Rhein in die Schotterterasse eingegraben?
c) Wie dick ist im Allgemeinen die Auenlehmdecke im Gebiet des Kühkopfs?
d) Welche Bodenschichten sind auf der Tafel dargestellt, wie dick sind diese?
e) Vor Ort ist der Boden aufgebrochen. Beschreibt mit euren eigenen Worten die Beschaffenheit der Schichten und die jeweilige Dicke.

Außerdem würde ich mich über spoilerfreie Fotos von Euch oder Eurem GPS in der näheren Umgebung des Caches freuen. Das ist natürlich keine Logbedingung.

The Kühkopf is an island which is formed by the Upper-Rhine and one of its former arms. It is part of the Hessian communities Riedstadt-Erfelden (Northern part) and Stockstadt am Rhein (Southern part). Ealier, the Kühkopf was an inland peninsula which was bordered by the old Rhine. When the course of the river Rhine was straightened in 1828/29, this area was completely seperated from the land. Thus, the Kühkopf became the island it is today. The area spans around 17 kilometres square. But let's look back in time.
After the alps had formed and the Upper Rhine Graben during the Tertiary (approx. 65-2.5 Million years ago), the glacial epoch started in the alps and the low mountain range during the Quaternary. When those glaciers melted, huge quantities of brash was transported from the higher altitudes to the lower areas. Then, when the alpine Rhine contected to today's course of the Rhine around 2 Million years ago, the Upper Rhine Graben started to fill with sediments. This phase ended around 10000 years ago, when the glaciers stopped melting. Since then, the Rhine is digging into the brash terasse and forms the Rhine lowlands.
After the glacial epochs and the formation of a rich cover of vegetation around 10000 years ago, the Rhine started again to transport finer material, such as clay and silt. Those seditments started to deposit in the meadows. The clay cover in the meadows grew mainly in historical times, when forrest clearances caused more errosion of the soil in the area of the rivers.
Vegetation is mostly influenced by the soil and the climate. In meadows and areas such as the Kühkopf however, there is a third factor superposing those effects: floodings. Every flood deposits new sediments on the meadows and thus contributes to the creation of new soil. As the deposit depends on the speed of the waterflow and the size of the sediments, the conditions of the soil can vary every few meters.

At the given coordinates, you can find further information about the soil at the Kühkopf. To log the Cache, please answer the following questions:
a) How thick is the layer of sediments which filled the Rhine Graben?
b) How deep has the Rhine dug into the brash terasse?
c) How thick is the clay cover of the meadow in the area of the Kühkopf in general?
d) Which layers of soil are depicted on the chart, how thick are they?
e) The soil has been broken open at the location. Describe in your own words the composition of the layers and their individual thickness.

On top of this, I would very much appreciate if you could take a picture of you or your GPS recevier in the close vincinity of the cache, of course without spoilering. Obviously, this is not a prerequisite for logging this cache!
