Geocache Description:

This is the seventh in a series of 7 caches (including the final cache) that forms part of a circular walk around the village of Hurworth On Tees (incorporating Hurworth Place).

Each set of coordinates will take you to a cache site, and waypoints are shown for parking and navigation where necessary. In each of the first 7 caches there is a letter associated with a number that you will need to make a note of as you go along. If you are planning on doing all 8 caches in the series it will involve a round trip of approximately 2-3 miles, and in this case suitable parking can be found at the Local Community Centre Hurworth Grange (Parking N54 29.174 W001 32.548). Please note bicycles are prohibited on parts of the full circular route as they are classed as footpaths not as bridleways. Part of the route also involves the use of styles so if you have a pushchair you might have to man-handle it over the styles. In wet weather you are advised to where suitable footwear. Two caches in the series are wheelchair accessible, and are located within approximately 2 meters of a roadway but assistance would be required to retrieve the final cache. THIS CACHE IS NOT wheelchair accessible Please replace the caches carefully. Enjoy! Croft Spa Station was located on the East Coast Main Line between Northallerton and Darlington and was situated south of this bridge (alongside the signal on the north bound track) but just north of the stone bridge that can be seen from this cache site. Croft Spa Station was opened on 27 October 1829. The first Station was a wooden hut about 9ft. x 6ft. with just enough room for a small sloping desk, a stool, two or three books, a ticket rack and small metal stove. It initially handled coal for South Durham and North Yorkshire and Lead from the Swaledale lead mines and was primarily treated as a goods route. In March 1841 a new Croft Station was opened on the main line and this was renamed Croft Spa Station in 1896 acknowledging its role in bringing visitors to the popular and established Croft Spa over the bridge at Croft-on-Tees. The station was served by local trains on the East Coast Main Line, and also trains operating on the Eryholme-Richmond branch line. The station had two platforms one on the down line and one on the up line and was built to the LNER standard plan. Although all the original LNER station have now been demolished a very good example of this standard plan still exists on the NYMR at Goathland. All that remains of the station now are the entrance gates and two flights of stone steps which can be seen at the end of Belgrave Terrace in Hurworth Place. The goods yard, known as Croft Depot, remained in use until 1964, when it was demolished, the branch line taken up and the site redeveloped for residential use. Croft Spa station closed to passengers in 1969 and the platforms and station buildings were demolished in the 1970's. Dare I shown my age (Daddy lambs that is!) and say that I remember using the stone step and standing on the platform next to the sattion house before they were demolished.
