We were lucky enough to have our event chosen for
official sponsorship by Magellan. The means we will have some great
items to give away including a new Magellan Explorist GC. So come
on out and join us for a great cause and the opportunity to win an
awesome prize.
It has been a year since the floods that
devastated much of Middle Tennessee, when torrential rains lifted
the Cumberland River 13 feet above flood stage, causing an
estimated $1 billion in damage, and killing more than 30 people.
Our community has made great strides in the recovery, many people
have moved back into their homes and downtown has reopened. We are
rebuilding, but the work continues.
A year ago, we were joined together
celebrating the Geocaching's 10th Birthday, when the rains began
that kept us confined to a picnic shelter. Twelve hours later that
same shelter was under ten feet of water and as we helped each
other make it home as streets and interstates began to close, we
knew that this was going to have long ranging effects on our
community. The rains continued for another day and a half and we
saw our city being torn apart, but our community coming
together.
That is why we will gather at 12:30 AM on
May 1st, 2011, one year after the floods, to continue the work.
While recovery has gone well in many places there is still much to
be done. When the Cumberland crested it's banks this is one of the
natural areas hardest hit. While many businesses remain closed in
the area and people have rebuilt their homes, this section of the
Mill Creek Greenway still has significant flood damage. So come out
and join us as we help give back to the community and support
Metroparks in their continuing clean up efforts.
We will bring coolers full of water and
trash bags, you bring a desire to help and any gear you think you
might need to help out (gloves, work clothes etc.) and together we
will remember this anniversary by sharing the undaunted spirit of
our great community of geocachers.
