Geocache Description:

I recently found a book on the Old Government House, so have decided to update this listing with this newly found information!
It's a pretty interesting place actually.

Old Government House in 1870

The Old Government House was completed in 1856, and was used by the government until 1865 when it moved to Wellington. It is one of the oldest secular public buildings in the country.

In 1867 Prince Albert, Duke of Edinburgh commenced a world tour, which included New Zealand, making him the first royal to visit the colony. The OGH which had been deserted up until now was refurbished, with a temporary ballroom erected. It was estimated that this worked out costing the country £1558.

The University of Auckland founded in 1883, under the name Auckland University College, and this posed a threat to the vice-regal status of the house.

In May 1914, a small fire broke out from under the floor in the guest chamber, and was discovered by a maid. Damage was minimal, as the fire managed to get put out within 15 minutes. In 1916 however there was a much more serious fire, as the house was unoccupied at the time, and a passer-by discovered the fire. Eight rooms, two corridors, and the roof were destroyed.

Due to it's location, it's a super high muggle zone, especially on the hour + or - 5 minutes during the weekdays, extreme stealth is required, and you're better off getting it another time.

Best time to get it? At night, or during weekends. Preferably night, however that may then make it difficult to spot. A torch may come in handy.
