The Southern Light is a replica of the fishing cutters that plied the Invercargill estuary and surrounding coastline from about the 1890's to the 1940's. These working boats were usually built on beaches from local timber and were a common sight around Southland's coastline. Cutters were versatile sailing vessels used for fishing, oystering and carrying cargo and farm produce.
