We are setting up this trail of caches giving you our version of a geocaching expedition. Along the way we will tell you some interesting information about the Lewis & Clark expedition. You will be going into the Hells Gate State Park where there is a Lewis & Clark Discovery Center where you can learn even more and visit a nice place here in the L/C Valley. You will not have to climb up or down into the rocks These are made to be easy finds.
On April 29, 1805, Lewis was Chased by a Grizzly Bear
Though warned by local Indians of the large, fierce grizzly bears, Lewis had decided that these animals were only a hazard to the Indians---because the Indians only had bows and arrows, not guns. He changed his mind one day when he and another man in the party encountered two grizzly bears. Lewis' companion shot the first bear and killed it, but when Lewis shot the second bear, he only injured it, which caused the bear to charge him. The grizzly chased Lewis 80 yards before it was shot and killed by the other man.
