We are setting up this trail of caches giving you our version of a geocaching expedition. Along the way we will tell you some interesting information about the Lewis & Clark expedition. You will be going into the Hells Gate State Park where there is a Lewis & Clark Discovery Center where you can learn even more and visit a nice place here in the L/C Valley. You will not have to climb up or down into the rocks These are made to be easy finds.
The expedition entered Montana at what is now the Fort Union Trading Post National Historic Site. In April of 1805 Lewis and Clark noted that the site where the Yellowstone flows into the Missouri would be excellent for a trading post. Fort Union was built near the confluence in 1829 and quickly became the top fur trading post on the upper river. The fort has been reconstructed and the once-elegant Bourgeois House is now a visitor Center.
