Geocache Description:

THE CACHE IS NOT LOCATED AT THE POSTED COORDINATES! Do not go there unless you want to see the former site of the Syria Mosque.

The Syria Mosque was a performance venue constructed in 1912. Over the years it held numerous events, mainly highlighted by concerts of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and numerous internationally recognized music performers, such as Buddy Holly (4 times in 1957-1958), Sam Cooke, Dionne Warwick, and Solomon Burke (1963), Bob Dylan (1966), The Who (1969), The Allman Brothers Band (1971), Carly Simon (1972), Pink Floyd (1972), Frank Zappa (1974), Genesis (1976), and Count Basie's final public performance (1983).

Several political rallies were held at the center, including stops by presidents Harry S. Truman, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Richard Nixon. Longtime Pittsburgh Mayor, political boss and Governor of Pennsylvania, David L. Lawrence made his last public appearance at a rally here in 1966.

On January 11, 1949, history was made at the venue as what would become KDKA-TV began its intial broacast--the first "networked" television program with shows from both the east coast and mid-west.

Despite community efforts to have the building designated a historic landmark, the Syria Mosque was torn down in August 1991 and the site is now a parking lot

Penny's "grandpa" always seemed to have a crossword puzzle book handy. Of course, in addition to classic crossword puzzles, the book also contained a series of other puzzle types. This cache is based upon the Skillogram puzzle. Don't be dismayed if you are not familiar with this puzzle type as its concept is relatively straightforward. By copying each square into the empty grid provided, you will produce a beautiful work of art... well, at least you will find the minute decimal components to the North and West coordinates to complete the cache location of:

N 40 27.XXX
W 079 56. XXX

Each numeral should be considered a single digit and "read" accordingly. The difficulty rating is based upon the puzzle solution. The cache is a black camo'd bison tube. Please beware of muggles. BYOP and an extraction tool would be prudent as well.

These caches are very similar but may have different directions to follow. All are located near an appropriate ethnic eatery.
