I'm a huge fan of obsolete infrastructure in general, and obsolete railroad infrastructure in particular. I actually rode the Lackawanna railroad through here when I was young. I rode the famous "Phoebe Snow" from Johnson City to Olean NY in the mid-1960's when the Vestal Parkway was route 17. After they built the expressway, the Lackawanna RR merged with the Erie RR to form the Erie-Lackawanna RR which ran on the Erie grade which is now the Norfolk Southern running on the other side of the Susquehanna River. The Lackawanna grade was abandoned and is now this great walking trail.

To do this cache, it will help to have a bit of esoteric railroad knowledge. Of course, Google is ALWAYS ready to help, although good luck will be needed according to what I found the last time I checked......I DID say esoteric knowledge........ Then use the following points to direct your search to the correct place:
  • Cache is a VERY WELL hidden bison tube within ten feet of the paved trail placed on the remnant of a "High Ball" maker.
  • The picture above is NOT at the cache location, but my faithful departed cache-dog ZaZou is showing you an example of a Highball!
  • Starting at the listed coordinates, tie onto your consist and drive down main #1 toward the Vestal station (or at least where it USED to be)
  • Go less than half a mile and be on the lookout for what's left of the old Highball Maker, but don't notch your loco too high, and keep your eyes peeled or you'll zoom right past it! REMEMBER: A Highball maker can have many indications and won't always give your train a "Highball"!
