This will be the sixth in the series Techno Events and the second for 2011. Those who attended any of the previous session, learned a great deal especially about GSAK and are applying it. There are many new (and some not so new) geocachers out there who don’t know the tools and resources available to them. This is a chance to get together to meet other cachers and harness the available technology to make your geocaching a more enjoyable pastime. The venue has limited seating (20) for those who want to come and join us between 13:00 and 17:00 to see the technology in action as well as to hear what the seasoned geocachers have to say about their experiences. So, whether you are a geocacher with 1 or 1000+ cache finds to your name come along and share what technology has to offer. The old hands will be available to give individual customised tutoring if that is what you require. There should be someone available who will be able to help you solve your questions.
We are going to put GSAK on the back burner and concentrate on how to put together a cache listing, using some elementary HTML. The next part is still open so it is up to you to drive this. If there is a specific topic that you would like covered feel free to suggest it on the forum or send me a mail directly. Keep an eye out, therefore on the forum for updates and discussions as to what additional topics are going to be covered.
If you would like to join us for the technical session, please post your attendance early as seating is on a "first come first served" basis. However, should you want to come just to meet up with everybody and renew caching friendships, discover some new coins or just enjoy a sundowner, braai fires will be available from 17:00 onwards. Please bring along your own "dop & chop".
If you are attending the first session and you have a laptop / Macbook that you can bring along, there is a WiFi as well as wired network to enable you to apply your newly acquired knowledge and experiment with the new tools. Refreshments will also be provided during the breaks throughout the afternoon. When logging your intended attendance, please indicate whether you will be coming to the "byte", "bite" or both. This will help us with the necessary logistical arrangements.
The full program for the afternoon will be published in due course once I know who is coming
13:00 Welcome, settle in and get online.
13:15 - 14:15 First lecture session. CJ (Happy Hunters SA) will be taking us on a lightning tour of HTML, the technicalities and how to construct a quality listing page, embed photographs and images into the listing to make it more enticing.
14:15 - 14:30 Refreshments will be available.
14:30 - 15:30 Tutorial: This is where you actually get to try out what you have learned and maybe even soup up one of your existing cache listings as an exercise. This will also be a time if you have other queries (even about GSAK) that you can seek the help of the more experienced and knowledgeable cachers. I am hoping that there will be a sufficient mix of people to afford those that need it, personalised one-on-one coaching. So whether you are a whiz at GSAK or have mastered your particular brand of GPS, I need you to come along to the event not only to enjoy the social but to be prepared to help out those you may still be struggling to master the technology. Whatever skill you have, bring it and share it!
15:30 - 16:00 More refreshments, smoke break and munchies.
16:00 - 17:00 The second lecture session will be taken by Anton from Damhuisclan who will discuss puzzle caches, how to approach them and the different tools to solve them.
17:00 till whenever... Braai, socialising, swapping coins, discovering new coins.... helping move some 2011 TB racers along while having a great time enjoying yourselves to the full. There may be a limited amount of geocaching hardware available if you are looking to acquire one of those elusive bison tubes to hide somewhere or some camo tape to make the cache disappear. Please bring along whatever you want to eat and drink.
