Geocache Description:

Christchurch Earthquake Cache #5

A regular cache hidden along a cycle way near the A&P Showgrounds. The A&P Association acquired the 145-hectare block of land on Curlett's Road in 1997 from the Christchurch City Council. Called Canterbury Agricultural Park, the grounds were developed as New Zealand's first purpose-built Show facility.

More recently, the A & P Showgrounds have been the meeting point for the Farmy Army - the name given to the Federated Farmers led group of volunteers who piled into Christchurch from all over New Zealand to help with the removal of debris caused by the 22 February 2011 earthquake. The Farmy Army also delivered meals to residents. Calls for help would be made over social media sites asking people to meet at the Showgrounds and to bring a shovel, a wheelbarrow and personal gear like gumboots, gloves, sun block and water.

The federation estimated that by 11/3/11, 4000 volunteers, including farmers and rural contractors had helped since the earthquake. The volunteers had removed 70,000 cubic metres of silt involving 28,000 hours of digging on top of 28,000 machine hours. In addition 5.5 million litres of water from rural reservoirs were delivered to hospitals and emergency services which initially ran low on water.

The cache is located near Curletts Road and although both the road and the Southern Expressway construction are fenced off from the cache site, care should be taken when visiting the area with youngsters.

Do not attempt to access the cache by parking on Curletts Road.  Parking is available at S 43° 32.943 E 172° 34.494.
