About the bridge:
Directly to the East you will see a famed paranormal site known as the “Aurora 3rd Bridge”
Ask anyone at nearby high schools if they’ve heard of this location, and you might be surprised. An amazing number of people, even at schools an hour away, have heard of this place. There is some debate as to which bridge in the area is the real 3rd bridge, and I can assure you this is it.
Just a few of the paranormal claims: seeing a girl, shadow figures, Indian on horseback, a horse running through the riverbed, finding dusty handprints on cars, strange fog only on the bridge, cars rocking and stalling on the bridge, and getting pulled off the road. The most common paranormal experience many people claim to have is hearing Indian drums.
The bridge was built over Kiowa Creek, which followed an early migration trail through Colorado. What seems to be the original interest by thrill-seekers is the rumor that this was the site of the Sand Creek Massacre, which was actually much farther away, in the North East plains. However, the Hungate Massacre happened just a few miles West of the bridge, and was a major event that eventually lead to the Sand Creek Massacre.
One of the other common stories is about a school bus of children that crashed and killed everyone. No such event occurred here. Other stories include witches and dark arts. It is also thought to be on a ley line, a source of spiritual power and energy.
The first known deaths at the bridge were in 1997. It was the result of teenagers heading to the site for fun, already dubbed “the ghost bridge.” The two cars were overcrowded, speeding, and the drivers were thought to be intoxicated (later disproven). Of the 15, two people died, one was paralyzed, and the others recovered from injuries. As a result, 12 ft of the 50 ft hill was shaved down, and the guardrail was improved.
The most recent tragedy of the area occurred just East of the bridge. Follow the road to the stop sign, and you will see a wooden cross at the base. A man was found here in the summer of 2010. It is believed he stopped to help someone with a flat tire, and was then carjacked, robbed, and murdered. The killer is still on the loose.
Feel free to post notes of your own stories and experiences at the bridge.
