Geocache Description:

This cache is in Heritage Park in Gordon, Texas. Magnetic Altoid container. BYOP Cache was muggled and has be relocated and replaced.

Gordon, once a thriving town of over 1000, was once the largest town in Palo Pinto County. Gordon was a railroad town serving the Texas & Pacific railroad to ship coal from nearby Coalville and by 1889 was the major trade & shipping center for the area. It had 5 general stores, 3 drug stores, 3 hotels, 3 cotton gins (which would become known to have ginned more cotton in one year than any other town in Texas), a flour mill, a brick factory, a Masonics Hall, an Odd Fellows hall, and 4 salons. The Ford dealership began selling cars in 1910 and is still in operation, said to be the oldest Ford dealership in Texas. In 1887 the Rube Burrow gang committed their 2nd train robbery as a train left the Gordon Depot. Gordon began to decline in 1940 with changes in farming, cattle shipping, and coal usage. In 1955 Gordon high school adopted the fast paced six-man version of football and became one of the top six-man programs of all time.
