A 5 minute stroll into some virgin native bush with many tawa trees, at a well known New Plymouth swimming hole and picnic area. THERE is also quicker access from SH3 but instructions about leaning tree etc are opp.
Put off line before you turn down to the river !
Start at the car park at the waypoint S 39 06.203 E 174 06.949. On your left you will see 2 tables. Look West to the start of the track about 25 metres away. Walk about 330m. from the tables along this track. - A track my mother-in-law walked along when first visited NP in1953.- hence the name of the cache. Along this track you will go around a big tawa tree right in the middle of the track, you continue along and then you will come to a dip (or boggy creek in the winter). The given Waypont is about 50 m on approx further on . Stop here and 4m ahead on the left is a tawa tree that leans slightly over the track close beside another tawa tree but i think this has fallen over and is not there now .-. The cache is on your left (road side not river side ) about 2 metres off the track, first tree at side of track about 2-3 steps only It is at GL and hidden in a black bag, under another tawa tree. If your GPS doesn't work under the canopy these directions should lead you to it. If you get to a biggish tree 40cm trunk, leaning over the track you have gone too far.- go back,30m approx and you enter the bush opp another very sloping tree that leans towards the river this time. A few treasures at listing and $2 for the FTF. There is another wonderful walk into DOC Reserve, following the track to the right of your parked car.
you can access this cache from SH3 and it is a lot closer .
