This cache was originally placed to support the COG spring event GC2Q931 in Elmvale ON April 23, 2011. It is a standard micro-sized container within the limits of the trail right-of-way. It contains only a log sheet so be sure to bring along your own writing instrument. Rubber boots are advised during the spring meltdown.
The North Simcoe Railway was built in 1878 primarily to serve the lumber business on Georgian Bay. It started from Colwell (Barrie) on the Toronto, Simcoe & Lake Huron Railway and ran 55 km to Penetanguishene. It was subsequently acquired by the Grand Trunk Railway and then the CNR, only to be abandoned in 1991.
In November 1992, a coalition of user groups offered to convert, operate, and maintain a shared-use recreational trail at no extra cost to Vespra Township. An agreement was reached which created North Simcoe Railtrail Inc. (NSRT). The Township of Springwater is the current land owner.
The entire North Simcoe Railtrail is an accredited portion of the Trans Canada Trail, a nationwide system that extends over 8000 km between the Atlantic, Pacific, and Arctic Oceans.
The northern portion of the NSRT includes a few detours along municipal roads where sections of the right-of-way had been sold off. This cache is located in close proximity to the northern extremity of one such leg.
This cache has been placed by a Central Ontario Geocacher!
