A cache in the Preservation Park / Hanlon Creek Conservation Area - an amazing place in more ways than one!
The Hanlon Creek watershed is a provincially significant wetland and one of the largest protected areas in an urban setting.
This section includes Preservation Park on the north and the Hanlon Creek Conservation area in the south. It is bordered roughly by the Hanlon Expressway on the west, Kortright / Edinburgh Roads on the north, Gordon Street to the east, and Clairfields / Clair Road to the south. Numerous residential and industrial neighbourhoods surround an area that is largely cedar swamp mixed with small pine plantation tracts and a large open meadow in the middle. At the right time of day you can almost be guaranteed to see - or encounter - deer on and off the trails.
One of the features of the area is a rat's maze of formal and informal trails that criss-cross the swamps. The provided parking co-ordinates are for the most popular access point to Hanlon Creek. As the cache name suggests, it might be a bit of a challenge to navigate to GZ given the various trails. Of course, there are parking and access points that are MUCH closer to the hide, but providing them would violate the spirit of the cache. Besides, the area has numerous other caches in the north and south sections.
Stay on the trails until you are within spitting distance, then it is a short bushwhack into the cedars. After setting the cache I discovered a side trail that leads to a local muggle hangout. Night cache at your own risk. Any efforts to do a little CITO would be greatly appreciated.
Container is a medium sized lock'n'lock - no cammo in case it is hard to get a good signal in the cedars. Please be sure to rehide carefully.
