This cache is located within walking distance of Smethwick Swimming Centre. There is a small car park on the front and a much larger car park behind the building.
Smethwick Swimming Centre was opened in 1933, and is one of Sandwell's best art deco period buildings. Although a little run-down at present in the exterior appearance, it is a Grade II listed building described as "an exceptionally fine and complete example of inter-war Civic design in Modern style.”
Smethwick’s swimming baths used to double up as one of the UK’s top music venues and in winter the pool was covered over with wooden boards to allow the likes of Mick Jagger and the Fab Four to raise the roof. The Beatles performed on November 19 1962 just before they hit the big time. The Kinks played there on February 27, 1965 and The Who on January 22, 1966.
The cellars were used as air-raid shelters in the World War 2, and there are relics still visible. For nearly all of its history there have been sightings of a little girl who has been seen in its tunnels appearing usually to young men! Voices of young children laughing beside the poolside are regularly heard in the middle of the night when there is no one in the building.
Other ghosts that have been witnessed include an American airman who is believed to have crashed in the back of building in the second world war. He was even witnessed when we were undertaking our preliminary visit!
This is an unbelievably active and big location that for its short life has an incredible history that includes the Beatles, World War Two and haunted tunnels.
