The Odd Fellows, a Fraternal order that originated in England hundreds of years ago, first purchased the property and the old Reed Springs Hotel in 1895. They used the hotel for an orphanage/old folks home. It burned down in 1900 and they built a new building—the Administration building or The Home, as the orphans called it. That building still stands and is the one farthest south which has been converted into a winery/reception center.
In the early 1900s the Odd Fellows built a school house for the orphans, 2 old folks homes, and a hospital. The buildings still standing on the property are one of the old folk’s home and the hospital. There’s also a bomb shelter in back, out buildings, a toppled barn, and a cemetery on the northeast side.
The buildings were never used as an asylum for the insane, although that is a rumor. And many people claim to have seen ghosts or paranormal apparitions in the buildings—including some carpenters who have been restoring the buildings. The buildings were recently featured on an episode of "Ghost Hunters."
Orphans lived in The Home up until 1955. Old folks lived there until the late eighties. For several years in the sixties the Liberty School District used some of the administration building to hold elementary classes until another elementary school was built in town. When restoration began several years ago some old school papers and children's objects were found hidden in the ceiling.

The folks at the Winery don't mind if you walk around the buildings, but only the one farthest south--the Winery--is open to the public. Don't enter any of the others. Watch your children as there are some areas which may be dangerous if they are not careful.
