Smiths Falls Then and Now is a series that I've wanted to start for a couple years now. Having done some "Getting to know ....." caches in the Ottawa Valley, I figured with the history of Smiths Falls, we deserved some too.
The historic info about the locations in this series has been obtained from books about Smiths Falls. Very interesting stuff.
View north across Smith's Falls waste weir showing (left to right) the planning mill of George Steele, the stone mill was built by the Gould's in 1868. Behind it the frame woollen mill of Darius Allport, the stone gristmill built by Abel Russell Ward in the early 1850's and the frame elevator and large stone roller mill added on by Alexander Wood in 1890.
The location of Smith's Falls at the intersection of the transcontinental CPR line and the line linking Montreal to Toronto allowed Alexander Wood to bring wheat from the Canadian west, mill it into flour in his roller mills, store it in the elevator capable of holding 50,000 bushels, and ship it out to local and urban markets in Montreal and Toronto when the price was right. Wood's mill provided work for teamsters hauling grain and flour from the freight depot.
