Smiths Falls Then and Now is a series that I've wanted to start for a couple years now. Having done some "Getting to know ....." caches in the Ottawa Valley, I figured with the history of Smiths Falls, we deserved some too.
The historic info about the locations in this series has been obtained from books about Smiths Falls. Very interesting stuff.
The Smiths Falls Public Market building was on the southeast corner of Market and William streets built for the town by Matthew J. Ryan in 1892. The town market effectively ceased to work as a farmers market in the 1920's as various wholesale firms supplied local and regional stores with groceries, produce, frozen and canned goods. The market became home to the Canadian Pacific veterans club in the 1950's and 1960's. In 1971 the town had the market building demolished to put up a parking lot to create more parking for downtown businesses. Five years later the County Fair Mall drew motorists to shop on the outskirts of town. Ten years later the beautification of Beckwith street removed as many parking spaces as the demolition of the market building created. Twenty years later the town attempted to reintroduce a farmers market on the street for lack of a market building, in an attempt to breathe new vitality into downtown Smiths Falls. This sequence of developments is mute testimony to the lack of a long range plan for the town.
